Verna Mae Underwood, born September 8, 1925, peacefully went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, July 7, 2024 after a long illness. She enjoyed 98 blessed years, nearly all of which she found great joy in taking care of her family. Verna lived in Coal City for most of her life, having grown up in Gauley Bridge, WV.
Verna Mae was very kind and humble, considerate of others. Widowed twice, she was unwaivering in her faith to the Lord. She enjoyed gospel music, reading her Bible, playing her guitar and keyboard, cooking, and spending time with her poodle, Bella, whom she adored. She always had an open door and heartfelt encouragement for her children and grandchildren, and was very close with them. She deeply enjoyed her time alongside each of them, helping them grow and learn as they reached milestones in their lives. You’d never go hungry at Verna’s house. She had a way of making her family feel special. When visiting with her, she’d make sure you were comfortable, that you had something to eat and drink, and she’d let you know you didn’t have to hurry to leave.
Verna Mae dedicated her life to serving the Lord and taking care of her family. She was joyful, helpful, witty and smart — and always put-together. Her smile was infectious and will be deeply missed by her family, who has truly risen up to call her blessed. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Lonnie Bowe III (Ruth), Randy Underwood (Beverly), Rex Underwood (Dorothy), and Norma Newell (Mark). She also leaves behind five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and her beloved Bella. She was preceded in death by her mother and stepfather Adgie and Howard Humphrey, first husband Lonnie Bowe, Jr., and second husband Fred Underwood.
