Shelvia Jean Carpenter, 79, of Burlington, NC, formerly of Coal City, WV, went to be with our Lord on May 4, 2018 at home surrounded by her daughters.
Shelvia grew up in Stotesbury, WV, where she began to enjoy literature, writing, academics and graduated with honors at Mark Twain High School and represented her high school in national competitions in writing and literature. She also enjoyed playing the trumpet in the band, especially the marching band at Mark Twain High School.
Shelvia married Wesley Carpenter in the summer of 1957. They raised six children who became her top priority. She instilled the importance of education, civic responsibility, sincerity, compassion, fairness, unconditional love, and laughter in her children. She volunteered and was involved in school functions and worked the polls for elections and shared all these experiences with her children to help guide them.
Shelvia was a longtime mail carrier; where she enjoyed working for the public and meeting customers.
She was fortunate to have her children to live with and to be cared for in her later years. She lived with her son Scott in Charlotte N.C., for several years; her daughter Sherri and her husband Charles in W.V.; and for the past eight years with her youngest daughter Sandy, who along with her husband, Kevin, were her primary care givers. They made sure she never missed a WVU game of any kind.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley, and brother, James Adams.
She is survived by her six children, Sheila Conti of Burlington, NC, Sherri Smith (Charles) of Beckley, Wesley Dane Carpenter (Cindy) of Manassas, VA, Scott Carpenter (Justin) of Charlotte, NC, Keith Carpenter (Annalisa) of Reston, VA, Sandy Hudnall (Kevin) of Burlington, NC; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
