Ruth Woods Cooke Thorne

Ruth Woods Cooke Thorne of Beckley, passed away Monday, October 15, 2012. Born in Beckley on October 23, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Ralph E. and Myrtle McManamay Woods of Beckley. She was a lifelong resident of Beckley and the last of her immediate family. Ruth was a member of the First Christian Church, member and past president of the Friendship Class, charter member of the Shepherd Center in Beckley, member of Senior Friends and the “Well I’ll Bee” organization of Beckley. She worked for J.C. Penney in Beckley for over 24 years retiring as the head of the Ladies Ready to wear department. Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Kyle K. Cooke and second husband, Lamaral W. Thorne; three brothers, Fred B. Woods, Ralph J. Woods and Robert J. Woods all of Beckley; one sister, Virginia Chambers of Glen Daniel, WV and sister-in-law, Mrs. Fred (Alma) Woods of Beckley.

Survivors include her daughter, Keith Cooke Rutherford and husband Jim of Greenville, SC; grandson, Tim Rutherford and wife Sharon of Taylors, SC; great grandchildren, Bailey and Connor Rutherford of Taylors, SC; six nieces, Mrs. Edward (Shirley) Obugene, Mrs. Jerry (Sheila) Cook, Mrs.Floyd (Carol) Wagner all of OH, Mrs. Doug (Eva) O’Neal of Glen Daniel, WV, Mrs. Karen Woods Collins of FL, Mrs. Lowell (Lois) Davis of Columbus, OH; one nephew, Fred B. Woods of Beckley, several great nieces and nephews as well as many wonderful friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2012 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Entombment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum A. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Friday.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
