Russell Robert O’Neal, age 98, of Crab Orchard, WV, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013. He was born November 7, 1914 in Crab Orchard, the son of the late Howard and Daisy Snuffer O’Neal. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel O’Neal and daughter, Karen O’Neal.
Brother O’Neal was licensed to the Gospel Ministry by the Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren (First District of Virginia, now Virlina) in December 1949. He was ordained prior to 1961. He has served as a free minister within the Crab Orchard Church and as pastor of the Oakvale Church. He also served as Chaplain at Pinecrest Hospital. He attended classes at the West Virginia Business College in Bluefield, WV during 1934-35 and at Beckley College during 1935-36. For many years he was associated with the grocery business. He served as store clerk in the Gulf Mining Company Store (1938-1943) and as an assistant manager/accountant at the Carolina Super Market in Crab Orchard (1946-?) According to the teachings of his church, Brother Russell served as a Civilian Public Service worker from December 10, 1943 until Jult 11, 1946. As a conscientious objector to war, he served on projects of national importance at Lyndhurst, VA (Blue Ridge Parkway/Forest Fire Supression) and Bowie, Maryland (Fish and Wildlife Base Camp).
He is survived by 3 nephews, Larry Priddy and wife Janie of Crab Orchard, Don Priddy and wife Vicky of Prosperity and Max Priddyand wife Glenna of Crab Orchard; close family friends, Jim and Sue Campbell and caregivers, Linda Muncy, Joe and Karen Birchfield, Sue Lilly, Delores Lowe and Christy Gouge.
Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, 800 S. Oakwood Ave. in Beckley. Those officiating will be David K. Shumate and Owen G. Stultz. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Friday.
Pallbearers will be Larry, Don, Max and Scott Priddy, Jim Campbell, Joe Birchfield and Mike Westmoreland
