Ronald Owen O’Dell, II (Ron, Ronnie, ROO II) of Lanark passed away very unexpectedly on Thursday, October 24, 2024 on his 56th birthday. Ron was born on October 24, 1968 to the late Ronald and Nada O’Dell in Beckley, WV.
Ron grew up in Welch, WV. He graduated in the Class of 1986, from Mount View High School. He was a proud member of the Golden Knights Marching Band Drum Line. This contributed to his lifelong love of all music. After high school he worked as an Assistant Manager of GC Murphy’s in Raleigh, NC and Culpeper, VA. He was a graduate of Bluefield State College with a degree in Business. In 1998, he went to work for the Department of Health and Human Resources. He worked in several different positions over the years. At the time of his death, he was employed as an Economic Service Supervisor for the Raleigh County DHHR.
Ron was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Welch and a member of the United Methodist Temple in Beckley. Ron loved spending time with his family and friends. He had many childhood friends he was still very close with. He loved NASCAR, WVU football, LA Dodgers, and the Pittsburg Steelers. He loved coaching his son’s sports teams and seeing them grow into adults. Ronnie had an infectious laugh, loved a good joke, and never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents Joseph (JC) and Dixie O’Dell, Phillip and Mildred Sweeney, brother-in-law Michael Thomson, and many uncles and aunts.
Ron is survived by his son Phillip O’Dell and fiancé Savannah Franks of Lanark, sister Nancy Thomson, nieces Jennifer Thomson and Alison Suptic and husband John, all of Sweeneysburg. Ron is also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Ron is survived by many lifelong friends.
A memorial service will be held at Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley, WV on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 2pm. Visitation will be 12-2. The family asks that you wear Blue and Gold in his memory for his service. Ron’s lifelong friends, Pastor Ray Jones and Stephen Fields will be officiating the service. The family requests donations be made to the F.O.L.K. Ministry, United Methodist Temple, 201 Templeview Drive, Beckley, WV 25801. This ministry feeds local children.
