Richard (Rick) Keith Lane, age 45 of Cool Ridge, died tragically along with his crew and co-workers in the Performance Coal’s Upper Big Branch coal mine explosion on April 5, 2010.
Rick was born the middle son on July 14, 1964 to Mason and the late Ann Coburn Lane in Albany, Oregon. He graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1983 where he was a member of the wrestling team and FFA. In 1985 he met his soul mate, Kim Parker and married her on July 5, 1986. They have one son Robert (Rob) Parker Lane and wife Jessica (Jessy) Lane of Cool Ridge and his one and only miracle grandson, Brody Parker Lane, whom he adored. Other than his mom, Rick was preceded in death by his grandfathers, John Lane and Darrell Coburn, grandmother, Mary Lilly, nephew Jason Propps (Lane) and cousin Jeff Lane.
Rick had been with Massey Energy since 2006, but also has many coal mining brothers at Speed Mining where his son Robbie is currently employed. Rick loved running coal. He enjoyed the hard work and took great pride in his work. Rick would never ask any man on his crew to do anything he would not do himself. He worked side by side with his men and respected every man on his crew. Rick and his family attended Camp Creek Community church. Rick was an avid hunter and fisherman and lived for the day he could retire and work only on his farm.
Other survivors include his grandmothers, Judith Lane and Dora Coburn, both of Cool Ridge, brothers, Terry lane and friend Cindy Matheny of Cool Ridge and Michael Lane and wife Karen of Midland, NC, Uncles; Wayne Lane and wife Jeri of Ghent, Jessie Coburn and wife Linda of Riverside, NJ, Kenny Coburn and wife Lillie of Cool Ridge and Gary Coburn of Cool Ridge, aunts; Barbara and husband Keith Lilly of Cool Ridge and Arlene and husband Rick Akers of York, SC, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, father-in-law, Jim Parker and Joann of Cool Ridge, sister-in-law, Kristie Parker of Mt. Hope. Rick is also survived by his closest friends; john Richmond of Pipestem, Sam Pack of Winston-Salem, NC, Denny McMillion of Grandview, relatives, David and Missy Parker Schoolcraft of Cool Ridge, multitudes of friends and neighbors that Rick cared for.
A testimony of Rick’s life will be Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Temple, Beckley with Pastor Russell Ellison and Rev. Tom Beckett officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Cemetery at Cool Ridge. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m.,Tuesday, April 13,2010 at the United Methodist Temple.
