The Reverend Betsy Morgan Evans found release from her valiant battle with cancer on Saturday, December 14, 2024. The daughter of Rev. Dr. Ross and Virginia Evans, Betsy was born on August 27, 1959. She graduated with honors from Woodrow Wilson High School, Roosevelt University in Chicago, and Garrett Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.
Betsy is survived by her high school sweetheart and loving husband Mike Evans of Beckley, her daughter Kristin Ingstrup of Denver, Colorado, son Trevor Ingstrup and wife Annie of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, her sister Donna Marie Todd of Sylva, North Carolina and her nephew Torey Morgan Todd of Lynchburg, Virginia. Her blended family includes stepsons Douglas Evans of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Joseph Evans and his wife Hannah of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
An ordained United Methodist Deacon, she was called to serve the church and society with “Word, Service, Compassion, and Justice”. Her legacy of service has touched many lives, from Prince of Peace UMC in Elk Grove Village, Illinois to the formation of the new Beckley Community UMC, formerly First Methodist UMC in Beckley, West Virginia. She was also a dedicated advocate for the communities she served. Betsy’s leadership was instrumental in forming the Beckley Community Church Warming Center, a shelter for the homeless in downtown Beckley. She retired from active ministry in October 2024.
The family wishes to thank the members of the Raleigh Shared Ministries churches for their support during her years of ministry, the visiting nurses of the Hospice of Southern West Virginia and the dedicated staff of the Bowers Hospice House.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2024 at Beckley Community UMC. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Reverend Evans’ memory may be made to the Beckley Community Church Warming Center to help her dedicated ministry for the less fortunate among us to continue its mission. Donations may be sent to:
