Raymond Joseph Cox, Jr.

January 2, 1947 — May 8, 2023

MacArthur, WV

Raymond went home to be with the Lord on May 8, 2023 at 76 years of age.  He was born on January 2, 1947 in Slab Fork, WV.  He was the son of the late Raymond J. Cox Sr. and Ester Rhoda Treadway Cox.  He was a member of the Bluestone View Primitive Baptist Church.

Raymond loved tinkering with old cars, going to car shows and watching his grandson, Tyler, race.  He loved working in his yard and sitting on the porch watching his cats play. If a stray cat showed up at the door, he was going to adopt it.   He enjoyed spending time with his family and was a devoted grandfather to Brad and Tyler.  Many wonderful memories were made with him they will treasure forever.  He would never turn down a Coca-Cola and a Reese’s cup. He was always willing to lend a helping hand in whatever need arose from a broken-down car to a busted faucet. He so enjoyed telling stories about growing up in such a large family and the times they spent together camping on the river. He had many great stories to tell about his days in the WV coal mines.

Raymond was a life long coal miner, spending 36 ½ years as a foreman and electrician. Most of his career was spent at CONSOL and Massey Energy.

Survivors left to cherish his memories include his wife of 59 years Rita Wood Cox of MacArthur; two sons Richard Cox (Katrina) of Prosperity and Jeffery Cox (Lydia) of Prosperity, WV; two grandsons Bradley Cox (Olivia) of Alpharetta, GA and Tyler Cox (Kathleen Torrico) of Prosperity; one brother Samuel Cox (Cerena) of Accord Mountain; three sisters Virginia Cole of Crab Orchard, Debbie Cox of MacArthur and Ester Blake (Dennis) of Mount Hope; a special sister-in-law Janice Wood Vandall of Tucson, AZ; niece Cathy Vandall Meyer of Tucson, AZ; great niece Heather Meyer of Tucson, AZ; brother-in-law James Wood of Wichita, KS; and a niece Kimberly Hacker of Wichita, KS; along with many other family members, nieces, nephews, and friends.

A gathering of his friends and family will be held Friday, May 12, 2023 at the Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley, WV.  Friends may visit from 11am – 1pm with the service being held at 1:00 pm with Pastor Jesse Farley officiating.
