Norma Phelps Thompson, a long-time resident of Roanoke, Virginia, died on Saturday, December 19, 2020. Born in Kilsyth, WV on October 12, 1930, she was the daughter of Henry Phelps and Mary Alice Williamson.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson HS in Beckley, WV and married her high school sweetheart, Howard C. Thompson, shortly thereafter. Husband, Howard, a retired pilot of Piedmont Airlines, and her sister Elizabeth Evans preceded her.
An active member of Oakland Baptist Church, she was known for her decades of volunteer time with Roanoke Memorial Hospital, the Roanoke Mission, and Ronald McDonald House. Residents knew her for her cake decorating business, her handiwork from quilting to knitting, and her artwork from oil painting to ceramics.
Norma leaves her sons, William of Roanoke, and John Patrick and his wife, Lorraine of Woodstock, GA and their sons, Sean and Brittany, his wife, and their children, Michael and Emmaline, of Jasper, GA, and Ryan and his wife, Lillie, of Decatur, GA. She is also survived by sister Mary Elizabeth Terry of Athens, WV and nieces and nephews Lynn (Paul) Plumley, Kay (Jim) Duguid, Sam (Kathy) Evans, John (Gina) Evans and their families. The family wishes to express gratitude to her caregivers, Melisa, Stephanie, Lynette, Emilee and Shelby.
Services will be 12 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2020 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Troy Bolen officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
