Nelle Weir Keefer

Nelle Weir Keefer, age 94, of Beckley, took the hand of an angel and left her earthly home on Saturday, December 5, 2009. Born January 12, 1915, in Beckley, she was one of three daughters of Charles and Eva Richardson of Beckley. Others who left for their heavenly homes before her were her two infant sons, her mother Eva, father Charles, sister’s Wanda and Floda, and her beloved husband of 58 years John Lemuel (Bugs) Keefer. Survivors to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Charlene Keefer Kirby and Sharon Keefer Rogers, and six grandchildren: Charles Kirby, Jessica Roop, Alisse Kirby, Keefera Rakes and husband Thomas, Audrey Cadle, and Bobbie Plumley. Nelle also had ten great grandkids and one nephew, Rick Cantabery along with his wife Shea and their two children, John and Abby.

Nelle graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Concord College. She was also a graduate of Marshall University. She belonged to the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority.

Nelle was a Raleigh County educator for many years and taught at Sophia, Soak Creek, Beckley Jr. High, and Park Jr. High. She taught Civics and United States History. After retiring, she continued to teach for many years as a substitute teacher. Nelle was a member of The First Baptist Church in Beckley where she served as a Sunday school teacher. Over her life, she was very active in WVEA and NTA where she held office. She was a dedicated 4-H leader where she influenced and helped develop many young lives. She volunteered many hours to Vacation Bible School and was instrumental in many church programs and functions. Nelle was a long time member of The Beckley Woman’s Club where she held past offices, including President, and was the founder of the Ice Cream Social.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 09, 2009 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Phil Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call one hour prior to service on Wednesday.
