On December 7th, Mary Jo (McNeely) Sopher found her way to Heaven to join her husband, Ira. Born January 14, 1930, she was a native of Logan County and the eldest child of the late George “Hubert” and Tessie (Shannon) McNeely.
Mary Jo was a dedicated housewife and mother, however, once her children grew older, she decided to return to work at C&P Telephone and later retired from Bell Atlantic. She served on the Crescent PTA, as Little League Team mom, Temple Beth el Secretary/Treasurer, RGH volunteer, Briarcliff Garden Club member and on the Beckley Beautification Committee. Playing tennis, shopping and watching the Reds were her favorite sports, although she remains eternally fond of the 1948 Logan Wildcats. In idle moments she enjoyed playing bridge, sewing and knitting.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters as well as one great-grandchild.
Mary Jo is survived by two sons, Tom (with wife Teresa) and Joel; grandchildren, Max, Kate, Aaron, Bryce and Jacob; great-grandchildren, Hannah and Tucker, all of Beckley, as well as sisters, Jean Embrey, Judy Mullet and Connie Taylor.
Visitation will begin at 10 am on Monday, December 13 at Calfee Funeral Home. The funeral service follows, in their Chapel, at 11:30 am with Dr. Joseph Golden officiating. Burial will then take place at Sunset Memorial park.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the Fund for Benjamin Walker Word (honoring Mary Jo’s great-grandson), c/o Beckley Area Foundation, 129 Main St., Suite 301, Beckley, WV 25801.
