Mary Hornbrook Kirkpatrick, Beckley, departed this life at the Bowers Hospice House on October 10, 2009. Born February 28, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Mary B. Lilly Hornbrook. Mary was a 1943 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended the Erma Beard School of dance. She was a graduate of Ward Belmont College in Nashville, TN, and the University of Kentucky where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. She served as secretary and treasurer of the Lillybrook Land Company, and established the Mary Kirkpatrick Professorship for Breast Cancer Research at the Wake Forest University Medical Center. Mary was a member of the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, H. Louis Kirkpatrick; one son, Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick, III and his wife Rebecca; one daughter, Ann Kirkpatrick Price and her husband Donald Price; two grandsons, John Kirkpatrick and Robert Kirkpatrick; step granddaughter, Amber Price; step grandson, Tyson Price and step great grandson, Keaton Burch.
The family wishes to acknowledge their appreciation to Mary’s caregivers from Visiting Angels, Bowers Hospice House and Hospice of Southern West Virginia. The family desires that any contributions in honor of Mary be given to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Dr., Beckley, WV 25801 or to the charity of your choice.
Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2009 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Elizabeth Stone officiating. Interment will follow in the mausoleum at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.
