Mary Helen Okes, 78, of Beaver, died Saturday, June 13, 2009, in a local hospital following a long illness. Born March 10, 1931, in Daniels, WV, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Wilson Okes and Leora Blankenship Okes. She retired after 38 years of public service with the United States Post Office as Post Master at Blue Jay Post Office. She was a lifelong resident of Raleigh County, a member of the Blue Jay United Methodist Church, and was affiliated with several Post Office organizations.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Edith Okes Benson and Kathryn Okes Moore, and three brothers, Grant Okes, Roy W. Okes, and Howard T. Okes.
Survivors include one sister, Emogene Okes Turner and husband John of Jacksonville, AL; two nieces, Marilyn Okes Olbrick and husband Larry of Phoenix, AZ, and Paula Gail Benson of Columbia, SC; four nephews, James A. Okes and wife Mary Beth of Soddy Daisy, TN, John Michael Turner and wife Jean of Birmingham, AL, Arthur W. Turner and wife Teresa of Irving, TX, and Brian Patrick Okes and fianc Kay of Blue Jay, WV, a number of grand and great grand nieces and nephews, and many friends.
A memorial service will be conducted this evening at 6:00 p.m. at the Blue Jay United Methodist Church with Pastors Paul Stadleman and Betty Lusk officiating. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Mausoleum B Chapel where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to the Blue Jay United Methodist Church, Blue Jay, WV.
