Mary Frances Anderson Hartsog, 89, of Beckley, WV, passed away surrounded by family and friends on Monday, March 2, 2020 in Chilhowie, VA, after a long illness.
Mary Frances was born August 13, 1930, in Beaver, WV, the daughter of the late McKinley Anderson and Ollie Bunice Buckland Anderson Worley of Beaver, WV. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John Dennis Hartsog. The passing of her brothers Andy and Glendon Anderson and her sisters Helen Anderson Nelson and Nina Anderson Runion also preceded her death.
Mary Frances attended Shady Spring High School, graduating in 1948. She then attended Concord College where she met and eventually married John. After graduating from Concord, she attended West Virginia University during several summers, until graduating with a Master’s Degree in Education in 1956. Mary Frances was employed by the Raleigh County School system for 40 years, teaching at Cool Ridge, Curtsville, Hollywood, Lincoln and Central Elementary Schools. She subsequently served as Principal of Lester and Bradley Elementary Schools until she retired in 1989.
Mary Frances was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, Beckley, since 1964 where she taught Sunday School, held many different lay positions and participated in the life of the church.
Surviving Mary Frances are her sons Gary Hartsog and wife Ellen of Beckley, Kent Hartsog and wife Rosanne of Hurricane, WV and daughter Susan Hartsog Hardy Combs and husband Bobby of Chilhowie, VA; seven grandchildren; Stephanie Renee Hartsog of Glen Jean, Tesla Hartsog Lewis and husband Christopher of Morgantown, LCDR John J. Hartsog, USN, and wife Emma of Crofton, MD, Travis M. and wife Jennifer Hartsog of Beckley, WV, LT Matthew E. Hartsog, USN, and wife Deanna of Virginia Beach, VA, Mary Beth Hardy Bolyard and husband Kenneth of Glade Spring, VA and Joshua Hardy and wife Haley of Lynchburg, VA; eleven great-grandchildren (Jack Hartsog, Sadie Hartsog, Henry Hartsog, Willa Lewis, Andrew Hartsog, Eli Hartsog, Ellie Hartsog, Charlotte Hartsog, Emily Hartsog, Parker Hartsog and Lucy Hartsog, and one due in April). She also leaves behind brothers Carl Anderson of Granby, CO and Roger Anderson of Geneva, FL, sisters Edna Anderson Dates of Winter Park, FL, and Joyce Anderson Dimitrion, of Stuart, FL, along with many nephews, nieces, cousins, in-laws, friends, and her beloved former students.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 pm Saturday, March 7, 2020, at Calfee Funeral Home Chapel, 800 South Oakwood Ave., Beckley, WV. Celebration of Life will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel at the Calfee Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Johnson and Rev. Michael Potesta officiating. Burial will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park, Harper Road, Beckley.
John J. Hartsog, Travis Hartsog, Joshua Hardy, Christopher Lewis, Kenneth Bolyard and Matt Hartsog will serve as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary Frances’ memory may be sent to the First United Methodist Church Trustees’ Fund, 217 South Heber Street, Beckley, WV or Wythe Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 1155 North 4th Street, Wytheville, VA 24382.
