Marie Clay, 69 of Prosperity, died unexpectedly at WVU Hospital on Friday March 10, 2023.
Marie was born on July 21, 1953 to the late Lawrence and Nettie Comer and later became the daughter in law to the late Margie cCay. Marie was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School.
Marie is survived by her devoted husband of 23 years, Ross Clay, her daughter, Tiffany Bowyer (Jerry), step-sons, Bill Clay (Tammy) and Roscoe Clay (Sabrina). Sisters, Sylvia McNeish and Judy Bays (Dennis). Sisters in law, Joan Gray, Brenda Alderman, Kathy Adkins, Anna Clay and Earleen Jennings and brother in law, Gary Clay. Her grandchildren, Gray Bowyer and Emma Bowyer (Alex). Step-grandchildren Billy Clay (Elizaveta), Adrian Clay (Megan) and Gabriel Clifton (Eric). Two nephews, Jay McNeish (Kelley) and Chip Fisher (Amanda). Also great-grandchildren, great nephews, nieces and extended family, as well as two very special friends, Rita Kiblinger and Carol Cook.
Early on, Marie had a passion for horses. She began her career showing Tennessee walkers and then Appaloosas. From there, “many pet stables '' and “wills show team” were formed. World championship horses and nationally ranked youth teams shortly followed. At one point, Marie was also the promoter for Diamond Rodeo. A major accomplishment was becoming the first female Appaloosa horse show judge on the east coast.
During the 1980’s she was the successful business owner of sSweet Dream Candies that was located in the Williamsburg Square. It was there, she perfected her candy making skills that would later win her awards at the West Virginia State Fair.
Marie was a retired occupancy specialist with the Raleigh County Housing Authority where her co-workers became like family. She enjoyed retirement by spending time with her grandchildren, working word puzzles and having fun with her sisters looking for bargains on “black friday shopping and at their annual christmas bingo. Marie was of the baptist faith and enjoyed watching the good news hour on sundays.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday March 16, 2023 at 7pm at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, WV, with pastor Jim Bowyer officiating. Friends may gather that evening for visitation between 5-7pm before start of service.
