Judy Gail Gunter

Judy Gail Gunter, 74, of Shady Spring, WV passed away peacefully on June 24, 2023 from complications of frontotemporal dementia.  She was born in Bluefield, WV on March 10, 1949 to the late Charles and Evelyn Smallwood.  She graduated Pineville High School in 1967 and attended Marshall University for three years.  Judy began her career with the United States Postal Service at the Jesse Post Office in 1977 and retired after 30 years of service in June 2007.  She was an active member of the Pineville Presbyterian Church for the duration of time she resided in Wyoming County.  She was a member of the church choir and served as treasurer.  She valued her sisterhood with the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Upsilon Master Chapter, since May 1976 and achieved Master Degree and Order of the Yellow Rose.  After moving to Shady Springs in 2007 she participated in the Phymosia Garden Club and enjoyed reading to children at the Shady Spring Branch of the Raleigh County Library and at local elementary schools.

Judy is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Ronald Gunter of Shady Spring; her son CDR Jeremy Gunter, USN (RET) and his wife Melissa of Virginia Beach, VA; her daughter Rebecca O’Dell, MPT and her companion Aaron Randolph of Hurricane, WV; and her daughter Dr. Angela Gunter-Forren and her husband Heath of Beckley, WV.  She is also survived by her five grandchildren for whom she was extremely proud; Jacob Gunter, Brooke Gunter, Emma O’Dell, Nathan O’Dell, and Garrett Forren. 

Judy is preceded in death by her brother Charles “Pickle” Smallwood and her son-in-law Chad O’Dell.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 at 10:00 AM at the Pineville Presbyterian Church located at 447 River Road Ave, Pineville, WV 24874.  In lieu of flowers, Judy’s request was that donations be made to the Pineville Presbyterian Church at PO Box 493, Pineville, WV 24874.

The family would also like to thank Stallie Allen for the wonderful care she gave Judy allowing us to keep her at home as long as possible and very special neighbors that are considered family; James, Amber and Carson Eitel.
