John Earl Tolbert, 93, of Lewisburg, formerly of Beckley, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015. Born May 9, 1922 at Crab Orchard, WV, he was the son of the late Luther Earl and Minnie Snuffer Tolbert. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
John was retired from C&P Telephone Company with 32 years of service. He served during WW II as a Staff Sergeant with the 70th Infantry Division in Europe. He received the Good Conduct, the American Theater, the European African Theater, the Bronze Star, WW II Victory and Army of Occupation medals, as well as the Expert Infantry and Combat Infantry badges.
He was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church and the Telephone Pioneers of America.
John is survived by his wife, Lorene McGrady Tolbert; son, Douglas Tolbert and his wife Pat of Ghent, WV; daughter, Donna Tolbert of Lewisburg, WV; grandson, Zac Tolbert of Austin, TX and brother, Billy Tolbert and his wife Dicey of Mt. Alta, WV.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Oak Grove Christian Church with Rev. William Calhoun and Rick Abshire officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 p.m. until service time on Thursday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Doug, Zac and Leslie Tolbert, Gene Loving, Eddie Rucker and Teddy Hanson.
The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice.
