John Basconi, Sr., 88, of Beckley, formerly of Oceana, passed away Sunday, February 21, 2016. Born July 2, 1927 at Bud, WV. He was the son of the late Dominick and Palma Coponi Basconi.
John was the former owner and operator of Johnny’s Texaco and Gulf Station in Oceana. He had over 30 years of service as a coal miner with Ranger Fuel, Amhurst Coal and retiring from Arch Coal. He was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church and the UMWA.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Alice Justice Basconi; sisters, Ellen Giammarco, Rosie Kamensky , Mary Basconi and Rita Dziak and by his sister-in-law, Sylvia Basconi.
John is survived by his daughter, Palma Stafford ( Donnie) of Beckley; sons, John Basconi, Jr of Fairdale and Tony Basconi (Melanie) of Beckley; grandchildren, Monique Bowyer (Tim), Jason Stafford (Kellie), Nicholas Stafford (Jami), Dereck Stafford, T.J. Basconi (Leslie), Alyson and Whitney Basconi, Alexis White great grandchildren, Dakota Bowyer, Chase Reid, Ayden Stafford, Zachary Stafford, Kaitlyn Stafford, Caleb Stafford, Sydney Basconi, Dylan Basconi, Sofi White, Zoe White. He is also survived by his brother, Americo Basconi of Lexington, KY.
The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers, Brinda Bennett and his sister-in-law, Gloria June Cunningham.
A funeral liturgy will be 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 24, 2016 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Father Paul Wharton officiating. A Rite of Committal will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to service on Wednesday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jason, Nicholas and Dereck Stafford, T.J. Basconi, Tim and Dakota Bowyer.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 614 S. Oakwood Ave., Beckley, WV 25801.
