Mr. James Emery Shumate, 72, of Coal City, passed away Monday, March 18, 2013 at Bowers Hospice House. Born September 22, 1940 in Beckley, he was the son of the late John Emery and Minnie Cozort Shumate. James was a greeter and security officer for Walmart. He was the former owner of Shumate Furniture of Coal City. James was a member of the Missionary Baptist denomination of the Coal City Community Church where he served as deacon and Sunday school superintendent.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Mallamas Shumate; son, Jason Emery Shumate of Oak Hill, WV; daughter, Diane Binder and husband Alvin of Oak Hill, WV; step-daughter, Paula Johnson and husband Jeff of Beckley; step-grandson, Christopher Johnson of Beckley as well as a number of first cousins.
Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 21, 2013 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Bob Stoddard and Pastor Dave Rumberg officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to service on Thursday.
Pallbearers will be Vernon Smith, Olen Dodd, L.W. Sears, Robert Rutledge, Dempsey Adams and J.C. Shumate.
