Helen Virginia Garner

Helen Hartsook Garner of Beckley passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024 at Greystone Assisted Living . She survived one week past her 99th birthday.

Helen was born August 24, 1925 in Lewisburg where she lived until marrying and moving to Beckley.

She was preceded in death by her parents Hubert and Bessie Hartsook and her husband of 54 years William (Bill) Garner.

She is survived by daughters Cindy K Shaw (Larry) of New Cumberland, WV , Nancy Dempsey (Mark) of Beckley, step daughters, Rebecca (Josh) Chapman of Beckley, Jessica Lambert (Jason) of Alexandra VA, and Sarah Dempsey of Panama City, Fl. Several great grandchildren, her sister Catherine, several nieces, a nephew, and her extended Dempsey family.

Helen was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for more than 60 Years, attending the Pathfinders Sunday School Class, Board of Trustees, Women’s Society, alter flowers arranger, and willing to do whatever task she was asked to do.

She was an excellent seamstress, sewing her daughter’s barbie clothes, family clothes, Sewing for Souls, turbans for the Raleigh General wig closet and lap blankets for both Hospice House and Humane Society.

Helen was a member of the Greenbrier Historical Society and truly enjoyed working on family history.

Nancy and Mark would like to thank her first caregiver, Glenda who immediately became her friend. Hospice who was only there a short while but made her last day comfortable. We would especially like to thank the staff at Greystone who saw and took care of her every day of her last year. She made so many friends, Betsy, Susan, Tresa, Stacy, the “pill lady”, Pauline and so many more….thank you!

A celebration of life will be held at Calfee Funeral Home Tuesday evening, September 3, 2024. Visitation is 5:00 to 7:00pm, service following at 7:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice House of Beckley, WV, or the American Heart Association
