Hazel G. Snuffer

May 5, 1920 — March 14, 2011

On March 14, 2011, once more walking in her husband Edward’s footprints, she succumbed only 4 days following his death. We believe it truly was from a “broken heart”. She was married 71 years to her soul mate, Herbert Edward Snuffer.
Born May5, 1920 at Chilhowie, VA, she was the daughter of the late William Grover Ferguson and Mary E. Ferguson Myers, and a loving step father John Amos Myers. Also preceeding her in death were a brother; Marvin Ferguson of Jacksonville, FL; half brothers Guy and Billy Ferguson, and half sister, Audrey Williams of Chilhowie, VA.
Hazel attended Stoco High, but one of her proudest moments came when she received her GED in the 1960’s. In WWII she worked as a telephone operator at C&P Telephone in Norfork, VA until fire destroyed their home. She then transferred to Beckley. She also worked in early years for J C Penney Co. and was right hand for the family owned construction company, finally retiring as secretary-treasurer from Wesco Homes in 1990. She loved to sew and gifted many family members with her needlework.
Hazel was a member since 1950 of the Memorial Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, served in several ladies circles, and led the BYF youth group for several years. She was a den mother, home room mother and did all she could for her sons. She was also involved with the Raleigh County Horseman’s Assoc., WV Horseman’s Assoc., and the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders Assoc. from 1956 to 1972.
Left to cherish her life are her sister, Evelyn Imboden of Beckley, half sister, Anna Sue Chapman of Chilhowie, VA; two sons, W. Edward and wife Connie Curtis Snuffer of Daniels, and Danny Ray and Linda Myers Snuffer of Beckley. Hazel’s proudest moments were sharing time with her grandchildren; William Edward Snuffer II, of Columbus, OH, Rick and wife Lori Basham Snuffer of Grandview, Eric and Regina Day Snuffer of Fayetteville, WV, Danny Ray Snuffer, Jr. of Flat Top Lake, and Charleston, WV, and seven great grandchildren; David, Christopher, Nathan, Rhys, Moira, Erica and Rachel.
Also surviving are three very special sisters-in-law; Joyce Bolen of Beckley, Gladys and husband Hartley Dunbar Jr. of Beckley, and Priscilla Snuffer of Fayetteville, WV.
Friends may call at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, from 6 to 8 Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. on Thursday March 17, 2011, at Calfee Funeral Home, with pastor Paul Blizzard and Dr. Charles Bright officiating.
Pallbearers are Mark Bolen, Chase Fadlevich, Kevin White, Mike White, J.E. Snuffer and Josh Fedotof.
Family suggests donations to Hospice of Southern WV, P.O. Box 1452, Beckley, WV to honor Edward and Hazel Snuffer.
