H. Louis Kirkpatrick

H. LOUIS KIRKPATRICK

H. Louis “Kirk” Kirkpatrick, Beckley, departed this life on November 25, 2010.

Born February 16, 1925, at Hopkinsville, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. W. B. Kirkpatrick.

Kirk was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary Hornbrook Kirkpatrick, and his sister, Elizabeth F. Kirkpatrick.

He attended Vanderbilt University and graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Mining Engineering. While at the University of Kentucky, he won the Old Timers Club award, and later was a UK Bowman Fellow and a member of the Engineering Quadrangle Society. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Force. He was a member of the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers.

Kirk retired from The New River Company as Executive Vice President. He was a former President of the Crab Orchard Water Company, a General Partner in the Kirkpatrick’s Beech Creek Coal Company, and a Limited Partner in Kirkpatrick Mining Company. At the time of his death, he was President of Lillybrook Land Company. He was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Raleigh and Horizon Bancorp. He also was a member of the James B. Duke Society at Duke University.

He was a member of the Mt. Hope Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder and a member of the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees.

Survivors include one son, Judge H.L. Kirkpatrick III and his wife, Rebecca; one daughter, Ann Kirkpatrick Price and her husband Donald; two grandsons, John Kirkpatrick and Robert Kirkpatrick; step-granddaughter, Amber Price; step-grandson, Tyson Price; and step-great-grandson, Keaton Burch.

The family desires that any contributions in honor of Kirk be given to the Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Drive, Beckley, or to the charity of your choice.

Services will be Sunday, November 28, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Elizabeth Stone officiating. Burial will follow in Mausoleum A at Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley.

Friends may call at Calfee Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2010.
