Geraldine Loretta Horton walked into the arms of Jesus June 4, 2020 to her new home in heaven to suffer no more. She fought a battle with Alzheimer’s disease for over 10 years. She died peacefully at her home with her children by her side. She will spend her first birthday in heaven tomorrow.
She was born June 5, 1931 in Sophia, WV. She was the daughter of William and Eva (Dickenson) Ashby.
She was baptized and of Baptist faith. She attended Coal City Community Church and was a member of the Ladies Circle until her health failed and she could no longer attend. Her greatest joy was being with her children and grandchildren and she cherished family gatherings. She loved working in her yard growing her beautiful flowers and feeding the birds.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Horton, daughter Beverly Inez, grandson Carlos Dewayne Horton, brothers Charles, Steve, Jarrell, Larry and Norvell Ashby, and her sister Effie Weddle.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children Bruce Horton (Charlotte) of Beckley, Rhonda Abshire (Gerald) of Prosperity, Eva Cook (Dennis) of Beaver, Rita Duncan (Ronnie) of Coal City, and Clarence W. Horton (Brenda) of Sophia; grandchildren Bill Cook (Freda) of Beckley, Andrea Hudgins (David) Williamsburg, VA, Darrell Spence (Valerie) of Sophia, Kelli Stevens (Keith) of Daniels, Crystal Smith (Jason) of MacArthur, Eric Duncan (Jessica) of Powhatan, Va., Stephanie Stewart (Andrew) of Beaver, and Dennis Cook Jr. (Jessica) of Charleston; great-grandchildren Lauren Hudgins, Carter Hudgins, Whitney Roberts, Maniya Stevens, Cayden Stevens, Lily Stewart, Jason Stewart, Allie Stewart, Jacob Black, Levi Spence, and Olivia Smith; her sister Phyllis Lambert of Sophia, and brother Lester Ashby (Joan) of Coal City.
