George William Thompson, 76, of Ripley, formerly of Fairdale, died October 31, 2016. Born June 19, 1940 in Beckley, he was the son of the late George P. and Norma Jean Snuffer Thompson. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his grandparents, George and Sara Jane Jones Thompson and William and Lida Adkins Snuffer.
George was a teacher for the Jackson County Board of Education for many years. He coached boys and girls basketball in both middle and high school and was also a scorekeeper for Ripley High School for over 30 years.
Survivors include his sister, Melva Jean Thompson Walker and her husband Willard of Fairdale; nephew, David E.R. Walker and his wife Dulce of Albuquerque, NM; niece, Sara Lucinda Walker Elam and her husband Bobby of Fairdale; great nieces and nephews, Kaitlan Nichole Walker, Ian Michael Walker, Robert Joe (RJ) Elam, Katherine Hope Elam and Elizabeth Grace Elam and special friends Mr. and Mrs. Terry Landis and family of Ripley.
A celebration of life will be held at 2PM, Saturday, November 5, 2016 at Calfee Funeral Home with Pastors Dewey Lowe and Nancy E. Martin officiating. Friends may visit with the family 2 hours prior to the service Saturday.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to Trap Hill-Liberty Citizens Scholarship Foundation, Liberty High School, P.O. Box 285, Glen Daniel, WV 25844.
