Evelyn Mead Parsons, 87, of Daniels, WV, died on November 2, 2010, at her home.
Born November 22, 1922, in Beckley, WV, she was the daughter of the late May George Buchanan and Alfred Grant Mead.
A lifelong resident of Beckley, Evelyn lived on Woodlawn Avenue for 47 years until she moved to Daniels to share a home with her daughter and son-in-law in 1998.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edgar Russell Parsons, her son Clark Edwards Parsons, an infant brother Alfred Grant Mead, Jr., a sister
Sara Mead Schaffer, and two dear aunts who helped raise her, Nettie Belle Edwards and Mayme Mead.
She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Vee Browning and her husband Don (D.B.); two sons, Mead Parsons and his wife Joan, and Edgar Russell Parsons, Jr., and his wife June; two grandchildren, Kathryn Parsons Henderson and her husband Jamie and Russell Mead Parsons and his wife Pam; a great-grandson, Samuel James Henderson, all of Beckley; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Lemon Parsons, formerly of Beckley, now of Clearwater, Florida.
Evelyn graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1940 and attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, her freshman year and graduated from West Virginia University where she was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority.
Evelyn taught public school for two years and taught private kindergarten in her home on Woodlawn for twelve years. She was very proud of all of her “kids” as she watched them grow and succeed.
She was a member of Black Knight Country Club for 52 years, the Highland Club, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully asks that contributions be made in memory of Evelyn Parsons to the Beckley Area Foundation, 129 Main St., Beckley, WV 25801; Bowers Hospice House, 454 Cranberry Dr., Beckley, WV 25801; or St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 200 Virginia St., Beckley, WV 25801.
Following her wishes Evelyn will be cremated. Visitation will be Friday, November 5 from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p. m. at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church followed by graveside services at 1 p. m. at Sunset Memorial Park (center section near the front gate bordering Harper Road) with the Reverend Chris Thompson officiating.
