Elmer Farris

April 15, 1916 — November 11, 2006

Mr. Farris was a charter member of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne division where he served as a glider man. He spent 41 months in the military, 29 of those over seas, participating in 6 major campaigns, and was discharged as a master sergeant. After military service, he returned to Beckley where he was co-owner of Gus farris Department Store working until the closing of the store in 1991. At that time, the store was the oldest continually operating business in Beckley. He was a life-time member of St. Francis deSales Catholic Church where he was one time director of the men's choir. He was preceded in death by two sister; Alice M. Lynch and Isabel M. Farris, and by three brothers; Felix P. Farris, Farris Joseph Farris and Dr. Frederick P. Farris.
