Ella Davis Laing Farmer

Ella Davis Laing Farmer, age 101, of Bolt, died May 9, 2009 at Lexington, KY of natural causes. She had been living in Lexington, Kentucky, with her daughter Linda Granacher and son-in-law Dr. Robert P. Granacher, Jr. She was the widow of the late Herman G. Farmer, a former sheriff and school principal of Raleigh County, West Virginia.

Born in Beckley, West Virginia, Ella Davis Farmer was the daughter of the late Macie Harper Laing and Thomas Kay Laing, one of Beckley’s first attorneys. She is the granddaughter of Henry Harrison Harper, pioneer founder of Harper, West Virginia.

Mrs. Farmer was a former teacher in Raleigh County, serving for 40 years as instructor of English, French, and Dramatics at the former Trap Hill High School, Surveyor, West Virginia. She had a great affection for her students and her State. With her students, she wrote a history of education in the Trap Hill District, and served as President of Raleigh County Historical Society. She was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church, Beckley, West Virginia, and regularly attended Breckenridge Baptist Church in Bolt, West Virginia.

Survivors include her twin daughters, Linda Granacher (Robert P. Granacher, Jr., M.D.) of Lexington, Kentucky, and Susanna Sadler of Jackson, Tennessee; two grandchildren, Eve Sadler and Phillip Granacher. Mrs. Farmer’s sister, Susanne Laing Harris, passed away March 24, 1997.

Same-day visitation and services will be held at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Avenue, Beckley, West Virginia, with Reverend Dewey Lowe from Breckenridge Baptist Church, Bolt, West Virginia, conducting the service. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 14, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon followed by services at 1 p.m. Burial will be in the Old Stone Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Lewisburg, West Virginia, with Reverend Dewey Lowe from Breckenridge Baptist Church, Bolt, West Virginia conducting graveside services.

Pallbearers will be Kelley Trump, Chuck Farmer, Gilles Caron, Alan Barnett, Robert Dorton, and Josh Caron. Honorary pallbearers are Gerald Miller, Alvin Farmer, Paul McGraw, Tom Harmon, and Al Farmer.
