Elaine Frances Brewer, 97, a longtime resident of Beckley, died May 1, 2012, at the Villages at Greystone after a long illness.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Beckley where she taught Sunday school and was a member of the Friendship Class and Circle. She worked many years in the church library and was known for her hats. She was a former member of the Woman’s Club of Beckley.
She and her late husband, Fred Brewer, founded and operated Brewer Distributing in Mabscott.
Elaine was a world traveler, having visited Australia, South America, Alaska, Hawaii, Germany, England, Austria, Switzerland, Scandinavia and Russia. She also enjoyed picnics at Grandview, family get-togethers, croquet and bridge.
She was born in Pence Springs on April 21, 1915, to Ira and Callie Earles Garten.
Besides her husband, Fred, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mona Garten “Peggy” Galaspie and Noka Faye Farley.
She is survived by nieces Mona “Missy” Farley Gulbin of John’s Creek, Ga., Jody Farley of Memphis Tenn., Meg Galaspie of South Charleston, Flicka Daniel Graves of Beckley, Susan Daniel Thomas of Seattle; great-nephews John “Jay” Gulbin (Toni) of Cumming Ga., N. Jason Graves of Beckley; great-niece Amy Jo Gulbin of John’s Creek; three great-great-nieces.
Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley with the Rev. Don Snyder officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers friends may make a memorial gift to First Christian Church.
