Eileen Rakes Smith

Eileen Rakes Smith, beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt, age 92, of Daniels, WV, passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013.
Eileen was born November 30, 1920 at Daniels, WV, where she continued to reside for the rest of her life. She graduated from Shady Spring High School in 1940 and lived her life strong in her Christian faith.
On the 10th of February 1940 she married the love of her life, Paul Andrew Smith. They were married 56 years until his death in 1997. She was co-owner of Paul Smith Plumbing & Heating, Inc. where she worked until her retirement.
She loved to sew and making quilts was her true love. Creating a new design or trying new patterns for her quilts brought her great happiness, especially a star quilt. She was an avid gardener where she grew a variety of fruits and vegetables and also canned the produce she raised. She was a mean puzzle player and never hesitated to jump in and help solve the annual family Christmas puzzle. Her specialty was figuring out the edges that formed the border of the puzzle. Her famous dinner rolls, stuffing and legendary fudge were enjoyed by many and will remain a great memory to anyone who had the opportunity to taste them.
Preceding her in death are her parents Daniel and Inez Worley Rakes; her brother, Raymond Rakes; sisters, Geraldine Bower and Anna Lee Meade; husband, Paul A. Smith and granddaughter, Paula Denese Smith.
Left to cherish her memories are her son, Paul D. Smith and wife, Nettie; daughter, Linda Sue Hunt and husband Steve (OH); granddaughter, Melanie Vanderpool and husband Leddy (TN); grandson, Steven A. Hunt (OH); great-grandchildren, Andrea Hunt (OH), Ashlyn Umbenhour (OH), Khayen Vanderpool and wife Bridget (WY), Kamela Johnson and husband Brett (DS) and Kellen Vanderpool (SD); great-great-grandchildren, Joslyn Johnson (SD) and Burke Vanderpool (WY). Special thanks to her nephew, Carson Meade, who helped with her care.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 16, 2013 in the Calfee Funeral Home Chapel with pastor Jack Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Worley Cemetery at Daniels. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Steven Hunt, Leddy Vanderpool, George Whitlock, Joe Rakes, Ronnie Wilburn and Robert Perry. Honorary pallbearers are Steve Hunt, Carson Meade and Larry Whitlock.
