Donald Edward Neil

Dr. Donald Edward Neil, 85, of Beckley, died early Tuesday morning, December 20, 2011.

Born April 8, 1926 in Gratiot Co., Michigan, he was the son of the late Wilbert L. and Julia Morse Neil.

Following his high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S Army Air Corps and served in Germany during World War II. Following the war, Neil attended and graduated from Albion College. After meeting Gene Mann in Lansing, Michigan the two were married in December of 1950. Graduating from the University of Detroit in 1955, he and Gene moved to her home town of Beckley where he practiced dentistry for 50 years.

Dr. Neil was a member of the West Virginia Dental Society, holding various offices including that of president, the American Dental Society, the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Pierre Fauchard Society, the American Academy of Gold Foil Operators, and was a founding and life member of the George M. Hollenback Operative Dentistry Study Club. He also served as an examiner for both the West Virginia Board of Dental Examiners and the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners.

A member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, he served on the Vestry, as Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, and as a member of the church choir.
Dr. Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Gene, a brother, F. Morse Neil, and a sister, Mrs. Jessie (Ralph) Battenhouse. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mavis and Ron McCollam of Beckley, his son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Teresa Neil of Alexandria, Virginia, a grandson, R.M. McCollam and his wife Andrea of Boston, Massachusetts, granddaughters Mavis Elizabeth McCollam of Boston, Massachusetts, Mackenzie Neil of Beckley and Tammy Romage and her husband Dan of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Smith and her husband Floyd, and Mrs. Mildred Reyburn, both of Michigan.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 21st in the undercroft of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church from 5 to 7 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held at St. Stephen’s on Thursday, December 22nd at 1:00 p.m. with Father Chris Thompson officiating.
