Charles Edward Cassity

Charles Edward Cassity died peacefully at Raleigh General Hospital, June 4, 2013, after a brief illness.

Born December 4, 1938, in Pemberton, W.Va., Charles was the son of the late Charley and Ruth Hester Stump Cassity of Crab Orchard. He was preceded in death by his son Charles (Chuck) Edward Cassity, II, wife Sharon Jeanette Goodman Cassity, daughter Virginia Sue (Ginny Sue) Cassity Allison; grandparents Samuel and Zanie Cassity of Pemberton, William E. and Luzenia R. Stump of Fitzpatrick, Marvin T. and Maude Rasco of Sullivan Road and Crab Orchard, and 54 Uncles and Aunts. Those left to cherish his memory are his granddaughter, Amanda Yvonne Allison and great grandchildren, Tyler Lee Edward Gooslin, and Alexis Jeanette Gooslin; sister Patricia (Patti) Dare Cassity Shirkey, brother-in-law, Kenneth B. Shirkey , sister Marceline (Marcy) Yvonne Cassity Lilly and brother-in-law, Michael E. Lilly; nephews, Rick Shirkey and wife, Barbara of Cleveland, Tennessee; Mike and son,Tanner Shirkey of Hamilton, Ohio; and Alex Shirkey of Belleville, Illinois; and Matthew Lilly of Beckley; niece, Megan E. Lilly, of Beckley; Aunt Louise Cassity Shekell of Michigan; numerous Cassity, Stump, and Rasco cousins; sister-in-law, Carol Goodman Scott; nephews and nieces, Mr. & Mrs. Brian Scott, and children of California, Mr. & Mrs. Keith Scott and children and Mr. & Mrs. Eric Scott and children of Richmond, Virginia,; Kim, his caregiver; close family friend, Ann Shirkey Toney, and too many friends to mention.
Charles attended Stoco High School, where he played football. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1957, where he was a member of the Thespian Club. He played on and coached various community baseball teams.
Charles served his country in the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. He worked in the Beckley community as a grocer/salesclerk; insurance salesman, Meadows Oil company, briefly as a coal miner, and the Beckley City Police Department. He also worked for General Motors in Flint, Michigan; during the 1970's he was a member of the Capitol Hill Police, Senate; in the 1980's J&J Construction Company, Deputy Sheriff of Stafford County, serving Aquia Harbour Police Department, Eastern Airlines and Trump Shuttle at National Airport.
Charles, who never met a stranger, touched the lives of many people with his charm, wit, and Irish- Indian storytelling skills. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, NASCAR, WVU sports and the Redskins, working crossword puzzles, playing card games, dancing, and music. He especially enjoyed Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, The Gaithers, and all music, but especially music of the 1950's and 60's. His strong faith in God sustained him throughout his life. His motto was, 'God will never give me more than I can bear.'

His love for his family and friends was immeasurable. A celebration of Charles' life will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 9, 2013, at Calfee Funeral Home, with Chuck Pullins officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.

Friends may call Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley. Military honors will be conducted.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
