Catherine C. Smith Scott

Heaven’s golden bells rang and the angels sang to welcome Catherine C. Smith Scott home on August 21, 2010. Her long illness had ended.
Catherine was born in Armadale, Scotland on March 14, 1927 to the late William Fisher Smith and Catherine Cooper Smith. She, her mother, her three brothers, Dougal, Alexander and William and her sister Janet Fisher arrived at Ellis Island in 1930 to reunite with their father. He had previously moved here to make a better life for his family. Kate was the last survivor of the Scotland family. They settled in Stanaford and had eight more children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Scott, Jr., brothers: Dougal (MIA in WW2), Alex (June), Willie (Eva), John and Thomas Smith, sisters: Beatrice (Bob) Scott and Janet Fisher Smith, sisters-in law: Margaret Scott, her card playing buddy, Agnes (Buster) Fox and Betty Scott, brothers-in-law: John (Gladys) and Bill Scott.
Survivors include her loving daughter and caregiver, Catherine Anne “2T” Scott of Charleston, loving son and daughter-in-law Robert and Janet Campbell Scott of Lexington, KY. Three grandchildren that were the lights of her life, Rob, Allison and Rob’s new wife, Whitney Yeary Scott. Granny was so happy to attend their wedding in November. Sisters: Marion and Janet Smith, who helped so much with her care, Mary (Fred) Smith of Baltimore and Peggy (Franklin) Carter. Brother, Robert (Reva) Smith. Sister-in-law, Elizabeth Scott, with whom she lived and brother-in-law, Tom Scott. Her special twin great nephews, Cooper and Aiden, who entertained her and gave her many hugs and kisses. Also, great nieces Hadley, Liana, Payton and nephew Alex. She also got to meet her great, great niece, Catherine, at the reunion in July.
She was a member of the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the choir, WCTU and Lady’s Circle. She was always in charge of many activities: Bible School, Building Fund, Christmas fruit baskets, dinners, showers and receptions.
She was a member of the Bethlehem Chapter #71 of the Order of the Eastern Star and past worthy matron. After her husband’s death she became a “Pink Lady” volunteer at BARH. She was in charge of the gift shop and became a friendly face to all the employees. She raised much money doing bake sales, where most of her goods were sold before she got there. Her Scottish shortbread was always the favorite. She devoted many hours per week until her illness.
She was a great cook. Among the favorites, fried chicken and potato salad (for Rob), roast beef and mashed potatoes (for Allie), pies, cakes, cookies, cream puffs and many other things we will miss.
She loved the WVU Mountaineers, the Reds and the Little League World Series. She liked playing cards, doing word search puzzles, planting flowers and making her family happy. She will always be missed.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at the Stanaford Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Lilly and Rev. George Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley from 6-9 p.m. Monday and at the church one hour prior to service on Tuesday.
Pallbearers will be her grandson, Rob, nephews, Sam Suttle, John Farrish and Chris Farrish. Honorary pall bearer will be Dennis McQuillen, her buddy who visited every week. Dennis said he came so she could take a nap. Also, men of the church will serve.
