Betty Jo McClung, 88, of Beckley, WV left this earth for her forever home, while in her own home, peacefully while sleeping on Friday February 2nd, 2024.
Betty was born in her parent’s home on McClure St, November 25th, 1935. She was the only daughter to the late Robert G. Agee and Stella A. (Denham) Agee Dunkley. She was also the sister to her Irish twin sibling, her late brother Robert G. Agee, Jr.
Left to miss her greatly but cherishing the time we had with her is her husband of 71 years Jack D. McClung and her four children. John McClung (Tina), Jeff McClung (Mary) and Robert (Leslie) and Patty Jo (Anthony). Being a mother was one of her favorite things. Being a grandmother though was what she was meant to be. She was blessed with 10 Grandchildren and 9 great Grandchildren with number 10 due in the summer.
Betty graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1954. She was a member of the Booster Club, Executive Committee, Theatre Club, House of Representatives Club, Sales Club and was the Editor-in-chief her Senior year of the Annual Staff.
Betty started Beauty School in Bluefield, WV in 1954 but then in 1955 she became a Yard Clerk for the C&O (now CSX) Railroad where she continued to work for 44 years until her retirement. She then got bored of not working and went to work part-time for the former jewelry store, Lilly’s Jewelers. She retired for the official last time in 2020 from Bill Straub, Jr’s State Farm Insurance where she spent 20 years as their receptionist and file clerk.
Betty was an avid dancer. She loved to dance. Betty and Jack were members of Mountaineer Dancers for many years traveling to square dancing conventions statewide with daughter in tow. She loved to Square dance, round dance, Line dance, Shag/swing dancing and more...she could be caught doing a two-step or such in the middle of the aisle in the grocery store if the right song came on. She was a former member of the Beckley Woman’s Club where she was a 50 plus year member and was honored at the Greenbrier for the positions she held and time she dedicated to the club. She was a member of First Christian Church in downtown Beckley. She was a part of the Fellowship of Christian Women and a dedicated member to the choir as an alto for many, many years. She was the perfect Grandmother, one that would give you her last piece of cheese or a bite of her favorite cake. No words can express the hole that is left without her.
Friends and family please join us on Wednesday, February 7th at Calfee Funeral Home, 800 S. Oakwood Ave, Beckley for visitation from 10:30-11:30. We will then proceed to Sunset Memorial Park, 1925 Harper Road, Beckley for the graveside service.
Pallbearers will be Anthony Anderson, Aaron Anderson, Brian Huddleston, Jeremy Southers, Jeff Jones and Matt Barnett.
The family would like to thank the Bower’s Hospice House and the nurses and staff for their commitment every day to us and others in their care. Even though we had a short 10 days under their care it means a lifetime to us. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Bower’s Hospice house with your time, money or donations of some sort.
John 11:25-26 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die”
