Alex D. George

Alex D. George, 92, of Beckley, died Friday, May29, 2009 in a Beckley hospital following a long illness. Born September 6, 1916 in Charleston, WV, he was the son of the late Daib and Mary Damus George. Alex was a senior partner with the former Georges Fashions in Beckley. He was a 1936 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, an organizer and past president of the Beckley Area Foundation and the Citizens Scholarship Foundation, organizer and past president and chairman of Cardinal State Bank, chairman of Bank One Beckley and served on the board of Bank One West Virginia. He served as campaign chairman for United Way of Southern West Virginia and was a former vice president of the Beckley – Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce. Alex was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, past president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Beckley Rotary Club, Past Master of Beckley Masonic Lodge and a member of the Mt. Hope Commandry Beni Kedem Shrine Temple. He was awarded the Golden Eagle Award by Woodrow Wilson High School and the Spirit of Beckley Award as well as the Distinguished West Virginian Award in 1995. He and his family were major contributors to the Raleigh County Library and the YMCA. He served with the 9th Army in Europe during WW II and coached basketball at Beckley College in 1939. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Alice Evangeline Saba George, brothers; George D. George, Lawrence “Pete” George, Ted D. George, and sisters; Margaret Moses and Adele Haddad.
He is survived by sons; Alex “Zan” George, Jr. of Beckley and Michael George and his wife Linda of Hilton Head Island, SC, grandsons; Michael, Jr. and Matthew George of Orlando, Florida, Chris George and wife Jessica of Scituate, MA and Alex C. George at Virginia Tech, great-grandchildren: Tori George of Florida, Tyler, Lilly and Alice M. George of Scituate, MA, brother, Louis D. George and his wife Margaret of Beckley, sister, Lorise Moses of Charleston, WV.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, June 1, 2009 at St. Stephens Episcopal church with Rev. Eric Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Calfee Funeral Home from 6-9 p.m. Sunday and at the church one hour prior to service on Monday.
